Get ready for mini nuclear power plants the size of a garden shed and without any moving parts to power your neighborhood.
Manufactured by a New Mexico company Hyperion the 25MWe reactors can power up to 20,000 homes and are small enough to be shipped complete in a truck, train or ship. Making these small reactors an affordable energy source for remote locations.
The self contained sealed non-weapons grade reactors are about 1.5 meters in diameter and will be buried deep below ground with a security detail on the surface. They must be refueled every 7 to 10 years. Because the reactor is based on a 50-year-old design that has proved safe for students to use, few countries are expected to object to plants on their territory. An application to build the plants will be submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission next year.
‘You could never have a Chernobyl-type event - there are no moving parts. You would need nation-state resources in order to enrich our uranium. Temperature-wise it’s too hot to handle. It would be like stealing a barbecue with your bare hands.’” Says John Deal Hyperion Chief Executive.
The initial cost of an installed and working unit is $25 million dollars or about 10 cents per a watt anywhere in the world. Or about $250.00 per home for a community of 10,000 households.
Hyperion already has more than 100 firm orders, largely from the oil and electricity industries, but the company is also targeting developing countries and isolated communities. The company hopes to have up to three factories making 4000 plants between 2013 and 2023.
