Tuesday August 26th- Day 3 of the convention was a very normal looking day in Denver compared to the few previous days. An incident first flared about 20 miles from all the events where I catch the light rail train to head downtown. As I approached the parking garage a field was surrounded by about 15 cop cars, and 5 to 10 fire trucks. Also on site were several bomb squad trucks. After gathering more information I was informed that some had reported a back pack with suspicious materials inside. Which I later learned turned out to be all clear.
When I got downtown, Hillary had just finished her speech at the convention, and the Obama Crew was out in full force. As the Obama hopeful’s flooded the streets, who were also all very buzzed and talkative about Hilliary’s speech, the protesters were very dismal and no where to be found. Most people described the Hillary speech as very moving, and insightful. The buzz and moral of lower downtown was very high as many people celebrated another night of what the Democratic party is calling a success.
After checking out the celebration scene I decided to make my way up to the stomping ground of the protesters. The protesters were not out in full force and neither was the huge police state. My suspicions about what the protesters were up too grew and so I approached a man wearing an orange bandanna which has been know to resemble the typical protester of the DNC. After questioning why the presence was so low on this night he explained to me that the protesters were given a message today. They were told that today would be a good day to rest in preparation for tomorrow where they would close out the last 2 days with a well rested crew. After last night, with more than 100 arrests, the moral of the protesters has only gotten more intense. They have also called off the truce with police because of the police’s actions on Monday night where many people were pepper sprayed and given beatings, during what they claim was a very innocent protest.
The remainder of the night was very quiet and the only shouting you could hear on the streets were the occasional ” BARACK OBAMA!!!!!!!!”. Never skipping a beat they kept the celebration going. Tomorrow there are quite a bit more events going on on both sides of the spectrum. The protesters are expected to back out in full force with no concern anymore for the rules that have been laid on the table. The Obama Crew has a very big keynote speech to be delivered by the new VP nomination, Mr Biden. Also uptown at the University, Ralph Nader is having a mini convention in protest to “Open Up the Debates”. I may be attending this event because I have received 2 free tickets. Whatever tomorrow may bring is anyone’s guess, but with only 2 days left on the convention each group will be out in full force tomorrow. Stay Tuned.
