The two faces of John McCain

By: D. H. Williams @ 13:42 AM - EST

In this video compellation we see Senator John McCain (R-AZ) speaking with sister of downed pilot Capt. Victor J. Apodaca shot down over Dong Hoi, North Vietnam, in the early evening of June 8, 1967. Dolores (Apodaca) Alfond is the Chairman of the National Alliance of Families. The video also includes the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council reception for Phan Van Kai the first ever visit by a Prime Minister from the Socialist Republic Of Vietnam, to the United States.

Speaking on the record Nov. 11, 1992 Alfond describes special sensors, shaped like a large spike with an electronic pod and an antenna; these were airdropped to stick in the ground along the Ho Chi Minh trail. These devices acted as motion detectors, picking up passing convoys, but they also had rescue capabilities. A person on the ground such as a downed airman or a prisoner on labor detail could manually enter into the sensors; pilots were trained on this operation. At least 20 authenticator numbers belonging to 20 known POW’s where transmitted by these devices in Laos.

The committee had so little regard to testimony given by Alfond that only Senator Bob Smith (R-NH) attended the public hearing. In the middle of her testimony John McCain suddenly rushed into the chamber, face angry and voice loud accusing her of making “allegations…that are patently and totally false and deceptive.” Then making a fist he shook his index finger at her and said she had insulted an emissary to Vietnam sent by President George H. Bush.

The P.M. of The Socialist Republic of Vietnam would receive a much warmer reception from McCain on June 21ST 2005 at the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council reception celebrating the 10th Anniversary of normalized relations.
